5 things to know about the Flame’s UofA signing

Via University of Alberta Via The Red Deer Express

The Calgary Flames have been on an absolute tear this season, so let’s hope their latest signing, Luke Philp, stays true to the course and is a hot move of its own. Thinking outside the box is always encouraged, so we’re pretty stoked (and very intrigued) about the Flame’s newest signed player. Here are 5 things to know about Luke Philp.

He’s a Local Product

Okay, so Canmore isn’t Calgary, but we’re still considering that local enough. He played his minor hockey there all the way through his first year of Junior hockey. No, we’re not giving him the keys to the city just yet. But if he ends up in a Flames jersey down the line we’re sure he’ll be making some local family & friends very proud.

He’s a Scorer

Seemingly everywhere Luke Philp has played has been a success. He wrapped up his university career with 42 goals and 103 points in 78 career conference games. Not bad at all for only three seasons of work. Oh, he also just won the U Sports Player of the Year for the entire country, in case you weren’t already impressed.

Leadership is always a welcome quality and Philp’s resume has it. In his WHL days, he captained the Red Deer Rebels as they hosted the Memorial Cup, so you know he can handle the big stage.

He’s a Winner

This is one thing pro sports organizations always look for when signing fresh talent; has the kid ever won something? Philp has, at both the university level as a national champion in 2017-18 and at the Canada Winter Games in 2010-11 when Alberta won the bronze medal.

He’s a Traitor

No, he’s not really a traitor. We’re just making sure you’re still paying attention. Sure, his University of Alerta days might rub some passionate Dino’s fans the wrong way (passionate Dino’s fans, feel free to tell us how you feel), but he’s won us over by shunning the Oilers in favour of maybe one day donning the Flaming C. Here’s hoping!

Philp has signed an entry-level contract that will most likely see him finish out the season with the Stockton Heat in the AHL. Who knows, if the Flames need an extra body during a deep playoff run, maybe he’ll get the call.
