The times they are a-changin’, folks! The famed Stampede Corral is officially going to be demolished later this month to make way for the new BMO Centre’s further expansion. It’s a sign of things to come, as Calgary’s Stampede park & events area is set for a whole bunch of new developments in the coming years.
Built back in 1950, the Stampede Corral has hosted everything from Stu Hart’s Stampede Wrestling to World Figure Skating Championships, and even Olympic hockey games back in 1988. It’s been a major component of the Calgary Stampede year after year, hosting a variety of events and exhibitions annually.

The BMO Centre expansion has been well underway for the past two years and recently saw the completion of a 100,000 square foot area on the north side of centre. The next stage of construction will lay the groundwork for the final centre expansion, but that requires the demolition of the Corral.
Obviously, seeing a landmark of this stature being removed from the city can leave people with mixed feelings. But, if the BMO Centre turns out as pretty as the renderings, we certainly won’t be complaining.
No date for demolition has been set just yet, but we’ll be sure to keep you in the loop.
