Some schools have been closed for nearly two months, and most parents at home with kids are on the edge of their seats wondering when they can send them outside to play in confidence again. Along with restaurants, bars, and non-essential retail spaces, neighbourhood playgrounds in Calgary were taped off to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Now that we’re nearing a week since officially kicking off Alberta’s relaunch, and have also been given the green light to reopen National Parks June 1st, many are hoping the city will consider allowing their rugrats to hit the slides again.
Well, we’ve got the news, folks. It looks like the city is thinking about lifting the restrictions on playgrounds next week!

According to Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who spoke in a routine press conference, certain measures will have to be taken before they do this. This includes doing a seasonal inspection and having parents supervise and sanitize everything. Hands will have to be washed before and after they play, and equipment will have to be wiped down, just as we would do at the gym.
“We do have to ensure that we’re doing these small things to keep everybody safe,” he said.
Parks are rightfully considered what they call ‘high touch areas’ and will need extra care to continue to heal as a city. Fair.
Because the city has not officially announced that they will for sure do so and have not made sure Calgary playgrounds are safe, the Mayor has asked that people continue to stay off the equipment until the yellow cation tape is removed. Until then stay safe, and we’ll keep you guys updated as more information rolls in!
