Quick- who’s your country music idol? It’s a trick question, since there’s only one answer, and her name is Dolly Parton. Not convinced? Well, the latest story about her partnership with the Calgary Public Library might shine some light on our pick.

As it turns out, Dolly Parton is an absolute icon in the world of philanthropy. For over two decades, she has been giving away free books to children all over the world. So far, that amounts to over 140 million books given away.

And, her latest partnership is with the Calgary Public Library! Dubbed ‘My First Bookshelf’, the program hopes to provide 1,000 Calgary children under the age of 5 with free books, every month, for one year. For reference, the ‘My First Bookshelf’ project helps 26,000 Canadian children in over 260 communities.

This pilot program may lead to a permanent partnership. If you’d like to support it, the library is looking for monthly donations as low as $5.50.
