NHL star P.K. Subban donates $50,000 to George Floyd’s daughter

We stan Subban! The New Jersey Devils defenceman and beloved Canadian, P.K. Subban, recently donated $50,000 US (or $67,481.75 CAD) to a GoFundMe page that was set up in support of George Floyd’s 6-year-old daughter. As if that wasn’t heartwarming enough, the NHL has actually decided to match the pledge.
George Floyd lost his life last month when a police officer in Minneapolis knelt on his neck and back for nearly 9 whole minutes, without granting him relief. Since then, as we’re sure everyone is aware, people have protested and have been fighting in support of Floyd and the Black Lives Matter movement.

“Justice has to happen, change needs to come,” Subban said in a video encouraging others to donate.
“We need all people to look at our lives and see where we can help that change, and do our part.”
This isn’t the first time P.K. has contributed to an important cause. In 2015, while playing for the Montreal Canadiens, the hockey player donated $10 million dollars to the Montreal Children’s Hospital. In response, they actually named the atrium after him, which he said gave him ‘goosebumps.’
According to the NHL, this particular pledge made by P.K. Subban was actually the ” biggest philanthropic commitment by a sports figure in Canadian history.”
“In life, I believe you are not defined by what you accomplish, but by what you do for others,” he said in the blog.
As of Wednesday afternoon, the Gianna Floyd GoFundMe had actually raised over a million dollars of its $1.5 million goal, which is incredible. If you would like to follow suit, even with a smaller, but just as a meaningful donation, you can find the official page here.
