Architects and designers, listen up! City officials are asking for your help to revamp Stephen Ave. You have till April 19 to submit your ideas and bring life back to this iconic pedestrian hub.

Why the change? Well, according to Michael Magnan, Calgary public realm lead, it’s time to make the street “better for Calgarians and visitors.” Simple enough! We like it.

We all know that Stephen’s a go-to spot for dining, shopping and entertainment. Plus, we’re pretty stoked about the new Stephen Ave Place coming to the scene in 2020. However, the city thinks it resembles too much of a ghost town beyond normal work hours. We gotta admit we’ve seen a few tumbleweeds on the odd Wednesday night.

If you wanna help Stephen reach its fullest potential, grab your team and come up with a wicked design plan! The city wants ideas that accomplish the following goals:

  • Increase street activity during peak and non-peak periods.
  • Establish a vibe that addresses existing character, heritage and attracts and sustains a range of established and unique business activity.
  • Create something for everyone, celebrate fun and encourage social mixing.
  • Find ways to address social disorder and help citizens feel safe.
  • Improve year-round pedestrian connectivity from end to end.
  • Balance mobility for everyone such as pedestrians, cyclists, goods, and vehicles.
  • Give users, occupants, and owners an accessible, flexible space.
  • Propose temporary measures to address the life-cycle deterioration of the public realm.

Sounds doable, right? For more information visit Stephen Ave’s page here!
