Doctors ask Alberta government to make masks mandatory in public

To wear a mask, or not to wear a mask. That is the question. According to an open letter to the Alberta government written by Masks4Canada, a group of doctors and physicians, masks should actually be mandatory in crowds, on transit, and at all indoor spaces that aren’t your home.
The group of accredited medical professionals is asking officials to consider enforcing them not with harsh penalties, but with education.

They’re also asking that masks be made available on transit, similar to a measure taken by other Canadian provinces. Quebec and Ontario require that some transit agencies actually require a mask to ride.
As of right now, the province only recommends the use of non-medical masks in public places. After receiving the letter from Masks4Canada, Alberta’s Chief Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Deena Hinshaw, said that this is something that they will continue to look into, but are going to hold off on for now.
“Before we’d make any kind of public health measure mandatory we’d need to carefully consider the pros and cons of that and any potential unintended consequences,” Hinshaw said during Monday’s routine press conference.
Conveniently, masks are available in several locations across the city, including at McDonald’s, Tim Hortons and A&W drive-thrus. If you feel the need to wear a mask, they’re absolutely accessible. If not, please at the very least, do your best to stay 2 feet away from other people! Stay safe out there, friends!
