Controversial Inglewood development gets approved by City Council

Calgary’s historic and vibrant neighbourhood of Inglewood looks like it will be getting a new development, but it hasn’t come without controversy. On Tuesday, Calgary City Council voted 13-1 in favour of a 12-storey mixed-use development called Rndsqr Block to go up on Inglewood’s main drag. Let’s take a look.
So, the proposed development would be located at Ninth Avenue and 12th Street S.E. where there is currently a parking lot. It would incorporate the adjacent CIBC Building that is next door, which was actually built back in 1911. Now, we don’t love the sounds of a 12-storey building on this strip, but we do like the idea of merging modern & historic buildings into one.

The Rndsqr Block building will include a ton of offerings. We’re talking main-street retail shops, a boutique hotel, apartments, and co-working spaces all wrapped up in what is quite an eye-catching facade. The see-through aesthetic isn’t just eye candy, either. Instead, this building would have what is called a ‘pedestrian interface’, allowing for more sidewalk space to be integrated into the area.
The controversy surrounding the project mainly arose from the height of the building, which is absolutely fair. After all, a lot of the Inglewood charm is tied to the fact that it looks like the Main Street of a small town.
So, what do you think, Calgary? The decision is still pending final approval, but it certainly looks like Inglewood is in for some new development.
