Take a look at Nupo, Calgary’s incredible new Japanese restaurant

Chef Darren MacLean has practically taken over Calgary’s Asian cuisine scene in the last year. In addition to Shokunin, a world-renowned Japanese gastro-pub, he’s also opened Greenfish Sushi, EIGHT and Nupo. We swear, the guy just never sleeps.

Nupo is an earth-friendly hot spot in YYC’s East Village. Here you can dive into plant-based dishes or sushi made with fresh, sustainable fish using Canada’s very first dry ageing chamber, and sip on creative cocktails or exclusive sakes.
Nupo’s original technique is meant to age the fish to achieve incredible textures and depth of flavour, hence the name of the chamber. This is actually done right in front of the customers in the center of the restaurant, so that’s pretty cool.

Unfortunately for those who live life spontaneously, from Wednesday through to Sunday, Nupo is reserved for the Omakase Sushi Experience. It’s the first of its kind in the city. You’ll have to call ahead to get a spot!
It’s totally worth it, though! During this absolutely insane 12-course sushi service, guests will be served rolls piece by piece on a mirrored plate, where the pieces appear to float. Yeah, 12 courses. We hope you’re hungry, friends.
Not only does it taste phenomenal, but the aesthetic is also familiar and inviting. You never really know how important this is until you’re sitting in a resto that lacks a vibe completely.

The decor here is purposefully minimalistic, but for a good reason. Nupo actually believes that it’s the people who bring the restaurant to life, which we can stand behind. We too, like to think that we’re pretty important. Life of the party.
Nupo is now open for full dinner service from Sunday through Thursday from 3 pm to 10 pm, and then Friday to Saturday from 3 pm to midnight. Clear your schedule, folks, we definitely recommend checking it out!
