In the last few months, we’ve seen some pretty cool solutions to a catalogue of COVID related problems. One of our favourites has been temporary patio extensions granted by the city to almost every bar and restaurant downtown to allow for more space. It’s been great, but now that there’s a chill in the air what are local eateries to do?!
Well, this week Mayor Naheed Nenshi said that he’d be willing to let these establishments continue doing this into next season, even encouraging them to ‘winterize’ their patios… but what exactly might that look like?

There’s still really no end in sight, so in order for Calgary businesses to stay afloat, they’re likely still going to need these patios.
According to Nenshi, installing heating lamps, and giving diners access to blankets might help keep people warm when it gets nippy, but at the end of the day, it’s restos choice.
This will definitely be an interesting one to watch, folks. Bars and lounges have all gotten pretty creative, so who in the heck knows what crazy solution they’ll come up with. One thing’s for sure, though – we’ll definitely continue to update you guys once we hear anything else on bars who have chosen to winterize their patios. Keep your eyes peeled, Calgary!
