After months of issues across Alberta, Planet Organic Market officially announced that it would be ceasing operations for good. That definitely tracks, since it was in October of 2019 that problems with their suppliers first arose.

Well, more like one problem- they couldn’t pay them. Turns out, people don’t like late payments on products, and they like not getting paid at all even less. So, they stopped shipping stuff and before long regulars began noticing slim pickings on their shelves.

All 11 of the Planet Organic Markets in Canada, including 4 in Edmonton and 5 in Calgary, are shutting down.

That probably snowballed into a feedback loop. Less product means fewer shoppers which mean less revenue, and guess what happens then? Even fewer products. We’d bet that these first few months of 2020 were spent desperately trying to find a buyer.

It’s a major bummer from one of Alberta’s best-known upscale grocery stores, but the grocery game is a cut-throat one. Here’s hoping everyone involved (employees, suppliers) get paid the money they’re owed.

We kind of doubt it for the suppliers, though.
