The organizers of YYC’s biggest anime and pop culture festival have just announced a major expansion going into the 2020 festival year. Otafest, in partnership with the Marriott Hotel in Downtown Calgary, has added nearly 10,000 additional square feet of space to the May event.

Otafest will now be held in both the Calgary Telus Convention Centre, where it’s been held every year and the Mariott, which means more people, more entertainment and also access to a rooftop patio. Pretty cool, right?

Other features added include a brand new performance stage, an evening program, and a bar service. Alright, party on, nerdlings. There will also be a costume repair station thanks to Calgary’s Costume Shoppe and a new lounge for meetups, photographs, and networking. Much wow.

“Expanding Otafest’s programming offerings through this expansion has been a huge effort from our team; and a key part of our programming goals,” says Vern Townsend, Otafest Vice-Chair of Experiences.

Townsend hopes to build on the already rich Otafest community and pushes to grow the festival by inviting dance groups to perform on their new Aurora Stage and encouraging local artists to showcase their work in their new space. As one wise man once said, “If you build it, they will come!”

Otafest will take place from Friday, May 15th until Sunday, May 17th. Tickets are available for purchase here, but they go quickly, so act fast!

We wonder if our mom still has our SailorMoon halloween costume from 6th grade… for a friends kid, obviously. Definitely not us, because it would be crazy to think even for a second that it would still fit. Right?
