The best and worst Super Bowl ads of 2020 (with video)

Fun fact: running a 30-second ad during the 2020 Super Bowl cost $5.6 million USD. Some of the world’s biggest brands drop blockbuster-levels of money on talent and production to fill less than a minute of screentime in hopes that they might start trending on Twitter or hop on a viral train and recoup their expenses with a boom in business.
That’s exactly what happened this year, and the results were all over the place. There is always a mix of good and bad commercials, so we’ve put together a collection of the best, the weirdest, and the worst Super Bowl ads of 2020. Enjoy!
The Best Super Bowl Ads of 2020
Jeep – Groundhog Day 2020
On paper, a reimaging of Bill Murray’s iconic film Groundhog Day doesn’t seem revolutionary. With Murray’s charm, however, anything is possible. Cameos from the original film make the whole thing feel nostalgic in a nice way, while Murray takes over the ad with humorous ease.
Amazon – Before Alexa
This is a solid ad all around. You understand what Alexa does, you have a couple laughs, and Amazon’s endlessly deep pockets allow for star power in Ellen Degeneres and wife Portia de Rossi, along with top-notch production value.
Hyundai – Smaht Pahk
What was the point of everyone doing their best “Goodwill Hunting” impressions? We don’t know, but honestly, we enjoy it. Chris Evans’ Boston accent was so natural we actually had to Google where he was from after seeing this.
Google – Loretta
Alright, so this one is a little divisive, with some people bringing up big tech’s consistent invasion of privacy. It’s a fair point, but this Google ad showcasing the true story of an 85-year-old man dealing with dementia in a very 2020 way will hit you right in the feels.

The Weird
Rocket Mortgage – Skinny Jason Momoa
Rocket Mortgage wants Jason Momoa to feel comfortable in his home. Rocket Mortgage doesn’t want you to feel comfortable watching this commercial. The 90lb, balding Jason Momoa image is effective, funny (in a disturbing way), and permanently etched in our brains. Not bad.
Mountain Dew – The Shining
Okay, this one made us laugh out loud, but goodness gracious is it ever odd. Bryan Cranston doing his best Jack Nicholson from The Shining is great, but doing it for Mountain Dew? Well, also great. We just wish this one had a little more to it.
Little Ceasars – Best Thing Since Sliced Bread
We’ll be honest, we’re suckers for Rainn Wilson. Seeing him as the inventor of sliced bread gradually losing his mind gave us a little chuckle, but the year is 2020, why is everyone excited about pizza delivery?
The Bad
Planters – Mr. Peanut
Let’s get this straight: Mr. Peanut was a peanut who made money off of selling peanuts so they could be eaten. Planters did the right thing by killing him off only a few weeks ago, but alas, this evil Peanut is too big to fail. Rebirthing Mr. Peanut as a baby is about as uninspired a move as we can imagine.
Audi – Let it Go
Did Audi have this pitch in storage for 6 straight Super Bowls? Frozen came out in 2013, so no matter how well-liked Maisie Williams is, having her sing a song from over half a decade ago to sell Audi’s new electronic vehicles is a little bizarre. That being said, the cars look great and the song does still slap.
Sabra – How I ‘Muss
First off, no one is going to start calling hummus “muss”. This commercial pitch should have been thrown out the window well before Sabra signed on a dozen or so internet celebrities and reality tv stars (along with a couple of A-listers) for what must have been a pricey ad.
