Calgary City Council to debate future of $4.9 billion Green Line LRT this week

Get ready, folks. Councillors are set to have a major debate regarding the first phase of the pricey yet highly anticipated Green Line LRT before taking another vote on the project this week.
The alignment has been a hot button topic recently, with some saying that it’s way too expensive. Honestly, they’re not entirely wrong, but it could also help a lot of people while increasing mobility in the city. So, it’s not an easy yes/no answer.

Phase 1 of Calgary’s Green Line LRT would run from the South East to 16 Avenue North, require a bridge between Downtown and Centre Street North and new train stations. In total this could cost a whopping $4.9 billion… not including interest.
According to CTV, councillors in opposition will be bringing a ‘lower-risk, higher value’ proposal to the table. This proposal is said to reduce financial risk. To do this, they believe they should connect southeast communities with the downtown area instead.
It’s probably better if everyone is on the same page before jumping into a multi-billion dollar project, right? Unfortunately, until Tuesday, we won’t know for sure what else will be said about the future of the project or the alternative proposal. We’ll definitely keep you updated as we hear more information though, Calgary!
