Most movie theatres in Calgary probably won’t open until end of June

Well, folks, it looks like we’ll most likely have to wait a little bit longer to smell the buttery good scent of movie theatre popcorn again. Despite several businesses moving forward with phase two (and a half) of Alberta’s relaunch plan, several movie theatres in Calgary have said that instead of opening, they will be taking this time to train employees and stock up on PPE.

Now, Cineplex Movie Theatres in Calgary has yet to say anything about opening; releasing only a teaser trailer for the new Bill and Ted movie. But Landmark has confirmed that they will not roll any film until June 26th at the latest, and that’s rather telling. The only theatre willing to dive right in so far is Canyon Meadows, who announced on Facebook that they’re ready.

Because Cineplex has 8 theatres in Calgary, which is more than Landmark, we can’t imagine that they’ll be lighting up that silver screen any time soon. There’s a lot of rehiring and reworking that needs to be done! Also, even when they do open, because production and distribution companies have had to pull movies and halt advertisements, there won’t be much, if any new content to show. We hope you like the classics!

On the bright side, according to the Calgary Herald, when movie theatres do reopen the elbow room will be killer! CEO of Landmark Cinemas, Bill Walker told the CH that only tickets for 45% of the theatre will be for sale.

Basically, by next month, we might only be able to watch Forest Gump or the Matrix, but we definitely won’t have to fight for a cupholder… and we guess that’s worth the wait? Eh, you win some, you lose some.
