Calgary favourite Anju has announced it’s closing indefinitely

Anju is one of the restaurants that sneakily put Calgary on the map. The contemporary Korean restaurant, in our minds at least, showed a new side of Calgary’s restaurant scene that hadn’t yet been explored.
Created by the Edmonton-born Roy Oh way back in 2008, Anju started out as a small, obscure restaurant downtown. But soon, Anju (translation: food you eat with alcohol) became the must-visit spot of critics and fellow industry members alike.

By 2013, Oh was feeling the pressure of having a restaurant that was, frankly, too busy. So, he partnered up with Concorde Group (Pigeonhole, Bridgette Bar, Model Milk…) and moved into a larger space in 2014. That spot on the corner of 4th and 17th has been around for over 5 years. Boy, does time fly!
But sadly, building issues that originally started during the January cold snap were too big to overcome. We’ve heard the heating kinda… died. Since the building itself is being redeveloped, Anju wasn’t likely going to be staying around much longer anyway.
Even still, we would have liked a goodbye dinner there. We’ll keep you updated with Oh’s next steps for this beloved Calgary restaurant.
