8 things to do at home this week in Calgary (April 20-24)

Happy Sunday, everybody! We hope that you’ve had a good weekend so far, and have found fun ways to keep yourself busy. Heck, at this point we’re stoked if we find something that keeps us entertained for longer than 30 minutes, so that’s the metric we’re going for with these picks.
Here are 8 things to do at home this week in Calgary.
Learn about classic art
But do so in the best way possible. For the past few weeks, the Getty Museum has been posting pictures of classic art in contrast with people’s attempts to recreate them. By now, they’ve practically got a full exhibition’s worth of content on their hands!
Fly around the world
Did you know that if you download the desktop version of Google Earth that it comes with a free flight simulator? It’s admittedly more ‘zoom over mountains’ than ‘learn to fly an aircraft’. But if we wanted to deal with physics, we would get Kerbal Space Program.
Get real creative with your cooking
By checking out a YouTube channel that focuses on 18th century cooking techniques and the general lifestyle at the time. Super interesting, and how could we pass up such topical subjects as “Stale bread, a block of cheese… It’s supper time!“?
Up your movie game
Think you’ve got things covered with Netflix and Amazon Prime, but still want more? Say hello to the Criterion Collection’s streaming service. We’re basically going to sum this whole thing up as ‘the best movies you’ve never heard of’, and they’re offering 2 week trials for free!
Explore the wild world of video games
Some person made an AskReddit post about getting into video games, and the top responses are all worth exploring. If you don’t want to sift through, then general consensus seems to be that Lego games or Minecraft are the ideal starter games. You’ll be speedrunning Dark Souls in no time!
Start a book club
We’re surprised we didn’t bring this idea up earlier. Oh well. It is easier than ever to access books online, and we’re sure that at least a couple of your friends have an hour or two free a week to dive in on a Zoom call. We suggest starting with some public domain classics.
Support local restaurants
A couple of weeks ago we talked about this initiative called Breaking Bread, that pretty much crowdsourced restaurants offering takeout and delivery, but might not be on an app. Well, that list has snowballed into well over 1200 restaurants Canada-wide.
Rewatch some education documentaries for free
Netflix has released a selection of its best educational documentaries for free. That’s cool in and of itself, but we’re more impressed with them also supplying additional resources to make the most of the learning experience. Plus, who doesn’t love the voice of David Attenborough?
And that’s our roundup of the best things to do at home this week, folks! We hope you enjoy it, let us know if you want in on our book club.
