Yeehaw, folks! There are plenty of things to do in Calgary this weekend that is for certain! It’s the eve of Stampede, and we are so ready to be rootin’ tootin’ cowboy shootin’ it’s not even funny. We don’t care about the forecast, we’re buying a raincoat, putting a hilarious cap on our ten-gallon hat, and getting out there.
Here are 8 things to do this weekend in Calgary.
Try Insane Midway food
Apparently, 2019 is the year of dill pickle taking over the flavour profile of things it never, ever should. You’ll be able to find Dill Pickle Pops and Pickle Ice Cream on the midway this year. If that is something you’re excited about, may God help you find your taste buds.
When: Starts Friday, July 5
Where: 1410 Olympic Way SE
Enjoy the World-Famous Events At Spruce Meadows
Whether you’re a horse owner, a fan of all things equestrian, or just looking to make some memories, Spruce Meadows is the perfect place to kick back over the next month. Their North American tournament has the best show jumping athletes and horses from throughout the Americas. Plus, shopping, pony rides, face painting, and the RE/MAX Prairie Dogs will be there to keep the family fun rolling.
When: On until Sunday, July 7th
Where: Spruce Meadows– 18011 Spruce Meadows Way SW
Get into the Cowboys Tent for cheap
In support of the Victoria Park business association, Cowboys will be offering a special deal for those who want to head down. Just spend $10 at a local store (like, you can buy ice cream or coffee), and you get free entry with a receipt before 4:30 PM. No joke, folks.
When: Saturday, July 5
Where: Cowboys Tent
Visit Hawkins, Indiana
If you haven’t heard, the Midway will be transformed into the Hawkins Fun Fair for the entirety of Stampede. We’re going to binge-watch all of season 3 instead of sleeping this weekend. Sure, we’re going to be weird on Monday, what of it?
When: Starts July 5
Where: Calgary Stampede
Take a break with Mexifest
Something Mexcellent is coming to town. It’s got guac, it’s got salsa, and it’s got a whole lotta spice. We’re talkin’ two stages, a wrestling ring, and a whoooole lot more to offer.
When: Friday, July 5th – Sunday, July 7th
Where: Eau Claire Market Plaza
Watch the Big Buckin’ Bronco Boys
The Calgary Stampede is, first and foremost, a rodeo. Never forget that, and always go to the rodeo at least once. Rain or shine, it’s worth it.
When: Daily starting July 5
Where: Calgary Stampede
Try The Guild’s Stampede Menu and cure your hangover
Ready to boot, scoot and boogie Calgary?! Two-step your way into The Guild and check out their daily Smoker Feature Menu! Not here for a long time, but a good time, The Guild is serving up something new each day from this bad boy. Make a pitstop on your way to the grounds and try it for yourself!
When: Friday, July 5 – Monday, July 15
Where: The Guild– 200 8 Ave SW
Get weird with RL Grime
He’s definitely not country, but RL Grime will have the Knoxville’s tent shaking like a polaroid picture come Sunday. And, you can get into the concert for free if you RSVP and show up before 8 PM. They’ll make their money back on drinks, though, so don’t feel bad.
When: Sunday, July 7

And there you have it, Calgary! Our list of things to do during the first weekend of Stampede. Maybe find a couple of neighbourhood Stampede breakfasts, too, and you’ll be absolutely flying. It’s the most wonderful time of year, after all.
