Well, folks. We’d be lying if we said we didn’t think this day would come. Unfortunately, Winsport Calgary will not get the chance to host Canada’s snowsports bubble this year despite the several hours spent planning and putting together proposals to host the various events.

The series of competitions, which would have begun on February 24th, would have included the 2021 world ski, snowboard and freeski championships.

With athletes, trainers and staff, Calgary would have undoubtedly seen quite a bit of traffic – a factor that largely influenced their final decision.

“While we are gutted, the safety and health of our athletes, coaches, volunteers and staff is, and always will be, our top priority. COVID-19 continues to evolve globally, and we believe this decision is in the best interest of our broader sport community at this time,” said Peter Judge, chief executive officer of Freestyle Canada in a press release.

“While this is disappointing, we will now turn our focus to applying that work to bringing the world back to Canada next season in an effort to help our athletes fully prepare for the 2022 Olympic Winter Games.”

Luckily for fans, Freestyle Canada and Canada Snowboard are working with their corporate and government partners to make things work for Winsport Calgary later on in the year instead… hopefully when it’s safer for all.

“The venue remains a key training ground for many of Canada’s best freestyle and snowboard athletes,” said the release.

Honestly, folks, we’re feeling pretty optimistic. Now is just not the right time, but there’s still a lot of year left and anything can happen! Here’s to a better spring, summer and an exciting winter 2021 season – COVID free.
