West Edmonton Mall’s Galaxyland is getting a completely new look

Galaxyland is about to get a major makeover. It’s been 24 years since Cosmo crash-landed in West Edmonton Mall’s amusement park. But now, after coming to an agreement with entertainment giant Hasbro, the lovable yellow alien mascot is out of a gig. Sorry buddy, but Nerf guns are just so hot right now!
Galaxyland is getting a floor-to-ceiling makeover, adding Hasbro branding to over 20 rides and games. The re-branded attraction will be the first of its kind in all of Canada, featuring familiar faces like Mr. Potato head and G.I. Joe.

Actually, this isn’t the first time Galaxyland has completely rebranded itself. The amusement park originally shared a name with the mall’s iconic hotel, Fantasyland, between 1985 and 1995. This ended when the mall was taken to court by The Walt Disney Company, who was already using the name at several of their own theme parks. Can’t mess with Disney.
WEM lost the lawsuit and was forced to change Fantasyland to Galaxyland, a name they will keep even after this year’s renovations.

“Both of our brands represent dynamic family fun and Galaxyland, powered by Hasbro, will combine our amazing rides and attractions with Hasbro’s loved and well-known brands,” said General Manager of West Edmonton Mall, Danielle Woo, in a written release.
Construction will begin this month and continue into the winter of 2020. However, the park will remain open during the entire process.
