Ahhh, the 50s. There were poodle skirts, cone bras, and drive-in theatres, but there were also some pretty different things going on in the Calgary skyline. For one, we didn’t even have a Calgary tower. (We know, right– what?!?)

The video below gives a little taste of what it was like to live 69 years ago. For the most part, we were still just a small dusty cow town on the edge of the foothills, unsophisticated and pretty much unknown by the rest of the planet. Underestimate us again world, we dare you.

Our city’s population blew up from 100,000 in 1947 to 325,000 in 1965, which means big architectural changes went down over 18 years. Skyscrapers sprouted up downtown, stores started taking up space and a major uni took shape.

Definitely cool to look back at things that shaped the home we know and love, hey Calgary?! Friendly reminder: the Public Library, Glenbow Museum, and your grandparents have a lot of cool stories to share.
