Uncover stunning summer exhibitions at the Glenbow Museum

For over 50 years, Glenbow Museum has been a cultural cornerstone in Calgary. Located along the iconic pedestrian mall, Stephen Ave, Glenbow Museum champions the art and culture scene in Calgary. Dubbed as a connector between art, culture and the world, Glenbow Museum continues to shape our community by providing thought-provoking, sensational and brilliant exhibitions that never cease to amaze us!

Glenbow’s latest round of exhibitions launched earlier this summer and run until September 22, 2019. They include Nick Cave: Feat., Ed Pien: Our Beloved, Second Skin, One New Work by Kent Merrima Jr.: Remnants and Ric Kokotovich Mardi Gras 1983-1987.

NICK CAVE: FEAT.

Nick Cave’s inaugural Canadian exhibition, Nick Cave: Feat. began in late June and continues until September 22, 2019. Through Nick Cave’s brilliantly colourful and politically charged art, he seeks to transform anger and despair into love, action, and possibility. Wowing audiences for decades, Nick Cave creates immersive mixed-media supernovas of colour and form with his critically acclaimed Soundsuits.

WHAT’S A SOUNDSUIT

Nick Cave’s Soundsuits combine fashion and sculpture and are made of once-discarded objects and flea-market finds that combine to create surprising and magical effects. Soundsuits are intended to be worn– once someone puts on a Soundsuit, it conceals race, gender, and class and forces viewers to look at the individual without judgment.

The first Soundsuit was created in response to the Rodney King police beating in 1992, and Nick Cave has built at least 500 more since then, often in response to acts of violence and racism in America. Ultimately the Soundsuits are Cave’s response to the darkness he sees in the world. He hopes that viewers of his art will find common ground with strangers and be inspired to put positive acts of empathy and love back into their communities.
