Incredible people doing incredible things! Calgary’s students never ceases to amaze us. Today, we’re sending a big old congratulations to the women of the University of Calgary rowing team, who just broke the million-metre rowing world record!
Yeah, you read that right. One MILLION metres, or 1,000 kilometres of rowing. We’re not sure we’ve even walked that far in our entire lifetime.
11 athletes set off on Monday morning to reach their goal of a millie in 75 hours, and they smashed it in only 70. Wow. If you’re like us, right now you’re wodering how in the hell that’s even possible. Well, according to their coach, it was a few things: Disney music, scheduling, and a ton of endurance. Each team member started with an hour each, then shortened into teams of two going for 10 minutes each, then eventually switching off every minute.

But it wasn’t all about records for the Dinos. They used the event to gather donations, with a goal of raising $5,000. Half of this will go towards Fast and Female, an organization that promotes sports and activity for youth. The other half will help cover the costs of upcoming competitions.
We really hope that as we write this they’re out there getting much-needed rest, because, damn. Unfortunately, the rest will be short-lived. The girls will be back at it shortly as they prepare to crush their competition at the San Diego Crew Classic in April.
Talk about intimidation! Just imagine going up against a couple of million-metre rowing record holders! Our quads are sympathy hurting right now.
