Leaving the nest, AKA the parent’s basement? You might be wondering what kind of living space you can get for your money. Rent in Canada varies from not too bad to horrifyingly expensive. We’ve got everything from affordable small towns to some of the most expensive urban meccas in the world, so here’s the deal: we found out what $1500 in rent per month can get you across Canada. From cockroaches to marble countertops, here’s what you’ll be looking at with a $1,500 budget!
VANCOUVER, BC

We hope you don’t like kitchens much. $1500 doesn’t get you many options in Van proper, but we managed to find a one bedroom in Fairview. This baby comes in at a teeny tiny 491 square feet. It’s got a legitimate shoebox as a kitchen, and you’re looking at shared laundry facilities. Nothing like the feeling of your neighbour taking your tightey whiteys out of the dryer for you! Sorry that the pictures suck, but this place kinda sucks.
CALGARY, AB
Trying to keep it central, we found a one bedroom spot in Connaught coming in at 664 square feet. While we wouldn’t call it gorgeous, some of the finishes are nice. If you can look past the 2-star hotel style bathroom, this isn’t too bad of a choice. Also, it’s got a patio. Fairly acceptable!
SASKATOON, SK
Ah, the prairies. Good for grass, the faint smell of cow manure, and cheaper rent. In Saskatoon, $1,500 gets you right downtown with 600 square feet. All appliances are included, and if you can deal with a strange floorplan, you’ll actually find this place pretty cute. The kitchen is modern, we’ve cast weird carpet out the window, and the building has some sweet amenities. Not bad at all!

Living in the ‘peg might not take you far, but $1,500 will. We’ve actually got almost 900 square feet and a den for our money here! We’d almost consider moving here for a granite countertop at that price. Keyword being almost. If you live here, we give you full permission to flaunt your excessive living space at us. We deserve it.
TORONTO, ON
Yes, we are also screaming. We’ve entered one of those infamously terrible rental markets when Vancouver was almost just a bad memory at this point. $1,500 rent snags you a teeny 300 square foot studio apartment. Terrible flooring and utter lack of space aside, this is actually in a decent neighbourhood. Maybe you’ll just never have to come home?
MONTREAL, QC
Bonjour! We’re in the Frenchiest Canada now, and we’ve scored 686 square feet and one bedroom for our cash. While they went pretty hard with the staging to dress up a decent place, the building is actually gorgeous. You’ve got an ample, if not super modern kitchen. Also, there is a valet car service here. Weird perk but we’ll take it!
HALIFAX, NS

Seafood, ocean air, weird accents, and extremely reasonable rent. Nice! $1,500 in Halifax gets you 900 square feet and 2 bedrooms. Location is good enough that you can forgive the miniature bedroom windows, we think. Such space, extra dollars for lobster.
So, that’s what $1,500 rent in Canada is going to get you. Some cities you’ll be struggling to fit a double bed while listening to the bugs creep through your kitchen cabinets. Others, you’ll be practically in the lap of luxury. We’re heading to Halifax, wanna come?
