Not only is the world’s tallest vertical drop sitting in Nunavut, but it’s appropriately named as well. Folks, feast your eyes on Mount Thor, one of the most intimidating mountains on the planet. Thinking about doing safety training by throwing a watermelon off something? You might have to do it here.

Mount Thor (technically Thor Peak) is just chilling on Baffin Island and has become a popular climbing destination for thrill-seekers around the world. Just check out this BASE jumping video of one of the smaller peaks in the area. That’s right, a smaller peak.

The mountain itself is 1675 metres high, and a whopping 1250 metres of that is straight vertical. Well actually, it’s 15 degrees past vertical most of the way. That’s right, we weren’t joking around about this- it’s literally over a kilometre of a straight drop. Think about that next time your standing on a balcony or something. Bah, we’re getting the chills just talking about it. Nevermind, don’t think about it.

Mount Thor was first climbed way back in 1965, but it took another 2-odd decades for people to get up the cliff face. And this was with a four-man team that brought roughly half a ton of supplies with them. In short, it’s no picnic out there.
But boy is it worth it for the dedicated. To put Thor’s sheer size into context, it’s more than double the height of the CN Tower (553 m) and has almost half a kilometre on the Burj Khalifa (828 m). Now that’s one heckuva drop. Just don’t look down if you ever find yourself at the top.

And what’s wild is that even with the world’s tallest vertical drop, Mount Thor isn’t the most famous mountain in the area! That belongs to Mount Asgard, which got some screen time in the Bond film ‘The Spy Who Loved Me‘.
We don’t why we’ve been sleeping on Nunavut- it’s obviously one of the craziest places on Earth.
