The Veteran’s Food Bank of Calgary needs your help!

Don’t wait for Christmas, people, giving season is all year round. The Veteran’s Association Food Bank is asking Calgarians for a helping hand. The organization says they’re at a ‘crisis point’ and are desperately urging the public to donate either food or money.

This is incredibly sad news, especially considering the holidays are coming up. The veteran-run program typically distributes around 40 hampers every month but needs that to rise to 200 come Christmas time. That’s a whole lot of food.

The food bank is also hoping to overcome a common veteran stereotype. When people think of veterans they think of their grandparents, but that’s not necessarily accurate. “We have 6,700 Afghanistan veterans,” a food bank spokesperson told Global News. Many of those who seek help are under the age of 30 and struggling to rebuild a life outside of service.

It’s apparent that Calgarians have it in them to give. Just last year the Calgary Food Bank was actually ranked the #1 best charity in all of Canada by MacLeans. This was followed by another Calgary charity, the Calgary Homelessness Foundation at #2.

The Veterans Association Food Bank does a lot more for these men and women than supply hampers. They also offer veteran peer support, emergency funding support, and even a sober living program. All of this just isn’t possible without donations from the public.

If you would like to donate food, you can visit any Calgary Legion, Calgary Police Service, or Calgary Fire Department Station. And if you’d prefer to donate money, you can do so online or at the Veterans Association Food Bank.
