The very last house in the East Village is scheduled for demolition

It’s the end of an era. The very last house in Calgary’s East Village is facing demolition. Let’s take a moment of silence for little Sanders House. It certainly put up a good fight.

The house currently sits humble and untouched, among modern architectural marvels like Studio Bell and the new Central Library. Talk about a little fish in a big pond.
The Sanders House, built somewhere between 1900 and 1901, for a whopping $600, is not protected through designation despite it being listed on the city’s inventory of historic resources. That means there is nothing stopping it from coming down to make way for a new East Village development.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), the time has come. And an application has been formally submitted to have the home demolished.
Reactions to the City’s decision are pretty mixed. The house may have been an eyesore for the last few years, but it represented a time gone by that long-time Calgarians will mix.
A few believe tearing it down makes perfect sense… considering its contemporary surroundings and the rapid progression of the area. But others who live local to the home, say they’re going to be super sad to see the little house that could finally say goodbye.
There’s no word right now on when the demolition has been scheduled. But we’re assuming it’ll be pretty soon. After all, the East Village has to start getting even prettier before the city’s focus moves towards the new arena.
