It looks like 2020 is going to be one heck of a travel year for Canadians. According to the 2020 Canadian Travel Trends Report, 73% of Canadians are planning to get out and explore some new places this year.

But what are Canadians really looking for when they travel in 2020? Are they wanting to head out to exotic destinations, grab some serious sun along white beaches, or will a weekend getaway suffice?

Skyscanner and Maru/Blue teamed up to ask 1,500 Canadian residents what their travel plans look like in 2020 and the results are an interesting mix. Let’s take a look!

1. Slow Travel – Canadians want to relax when they travel in 2020. The idea of “needing a vacation from their vacation” is falling out of style, with 40% of people saying they are going to aim for rest and relaxation instead of sightseeing. Fair enough!

2. Micro Escapes – Here are those major weekend getaway vibes we mentioned. Whether it’s hiking, camping, or a weekend at the lake, 34% of Canadians are aiming for quick and easy travel options come 2020.

3. JOMO Trips – Ah, yes. Finally, we have gotten over the constant energy drain that is FOMO or “fear of missing out”.  Introducing JOMO, the “joy of missing out”. Nearly a quarter (24%) of Canadians are ready to quit planning trips around their Instagram feed and instead head to hidden escapes and less popular destinations.

4. Foodie Trips – Nearly 20% of Canadians said they are ready and willing to plan travel around trying local food. That number’s a tad low, but that just means more food for us.

6. Life-Changing Journeys – This should come as no surprise, but 7% of Canadians want their travel to be journeys of transformation. 2020 is the self-care year, you heard it here first.
