Calling everyone that’s into rare coins (all 84 of you across Canada), there’s a new one that is calling your name, and a Canadian first. The new $50 coin is shaped like the country itself, and was made of 3 oz. of pure silver. Definitely don’t actually use it to buy groceries.

Anyway, let’s dive into the magical world of numismatics, shall we?

A little backstory- the coin’s design comes from Canadian artist Alisha Giroux. A few years back, she created a map design that used different animals to represent our provinces and territories. When the Royal Canadian Mint’s product manager saw it, he knew that he had to incorporate the design into an upcoming coin.

The coin itself costs a whopping $340 CAD, due to the large quantity of silver used and the unique design. But hey, you can pay it off in instalments if you want to instead. Plus, you have to admit that it would be the perfect guide for an older relative that a) loves animals and b) loves to have rare coins.

You can check out the new $50 coin on the Royal Canadian Mint website.
