Wave goodbye to the classic food guide that you grew up with, folks, a new road to nutrition has been paved.

2019 has brought a lot of change with it in only three weeks. First, the stock markets did something, then the gas prices went somewhere, and now we’re saying good riddance to the food guide we know and don’t really care about.

Since 1942, we’ve been stuck chowing down grub recommended by Canada’s Official Food Rules. The rainbow food-guide that we’ve all become so familiar with was derived from wartime portions and nutrition, so it’s safe to say that ‘actually enjoying the meal’ wasn’t high on the list of priorities.

That’s all changing (somewhat) with the new and improved guide. Long gone are the quantitative rules about how many Brussels sprouts you need to force-feed in order to hit a daily vitamin-requirement. The new initiatives focus on qualitative measures, like “taking time to eat”, “plan meals ahead of time”, “cooking for yourself”.

Sure, fruits, veggies, and the healthy eats are still getting most of the attention. But now the guide leans toward making healthy-eating a fun, necessary, and habitual process. Here are the 5 basic keys:

– Eat vegetables, fruit, whole grains and protein regularly.
– Less meat protein, more plant-based proteins
– Choose unsaturated over saturated fats
– Drink pretty much only water (looking at you, booze)
– Choose home-cooked meals over processed or prepared food

Hey, anyone that tells us that we should enjoy eating is automatically in our good books. So well done, Health Canada, we’ll enjoy our well-balanced meals with you in mind!
