Only two outdoor pools in Calgary will be reopening this summer

Well, we can’t say that we’re surprised, but we are kind of bummed. According to the YYC Swimming Pool Association, only two outdoor pools in Calgary will be reopening for the summer. Now, we don’t really frequent the outdoor pool anymore, but we remember going almost every other day in the warmer months when we were kids, and it sucks that some will miss out on that in 2020.
Pools are expensive to maintain, and with all of the extra work that needs to be done to keep everything clean, facilities will have to hire more staff. Changes will have to be made and they won’t be able to allow as many people in the pool area, which puts them in a difficult place financially, which is why we’re left with two this year.

These changes have been put in place to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, and are totally necessary, but might be difficult for some. In addition to limited capacity, public change rooms will be unavailable. Also, staff will be counting how many people enter and exit to keep the limit to 60 people per area.
Silver Springs and Highwood will be the only two outdoor pools in Calgary open this season, but we suppose in the grand scheme of things, that’s better than nothing, right!?
Despite this, we hope you enjoy your summer, Calgary. Stay safe! There’s always next year.
