Big news, big news! In a vote of 14 to 1, after several debates and financial hurdles, city council has made it official! Calgary will go ahead with the $5.5 billion North-South Green Line LRT project, and they could begin construction as early as next spring.

“This isn’t a big day for Calgary. It’s the biggest day. This project is going to change the way Calgarians get around, shape reinvestment in our communities, and help stimulate our local economy,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said on Twitter.

Led by Councillor Shane Keating, Stage 1 of the Green Line project is actually the largest infrastructure project in the city’s history.

The LRT, which will run from 16 Avenue North to Shepard in the SE, will be built in phases. The first alignment will be built from the Elbow River to Shepard. Then, the city will begin to connect 2nd Avenue and to the Elbow River. Finally, the last segment in the first stage will run from 16th Avenue in the North to 2nd Avenue station in the SW.

When complete, Stage 1 will run a total of 20 kilometres and have 15 new stations. That’s crazy! The entire buildout of the Green Line is expected to run 46 kilometres with a total of 28 stations. Wowza.

“Stage 1 builds the core of the Green Line long-term vision and will enable future incremental expansion as funding is available to realize the full benefits of the rapid transit network,” said Michael Thompson, General Manager of Green Line in a press release.

According to the City of Calgary, the “Green Line will improve mobility choices connecting people to destinations across the city.” 65,000 people, to be exact. It’s also expected to save an incredible 30,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, which could be incredible.

Unfortunately, we’ll have to wait until 2026 when its complete to find out, but our fingers are crossed, because man, is this one hefty project.
