Highly anticipated Black Lives Matter mural slated for YYC’s Chinatown

After weeks of discussion, the city and advocacy group, Pink Flamingo, have finally found a home for the long-awaited, highly anticipated, much-needed Calgary Black Lives Matter Mural.
This publicly-funded art piece was actually slated to begin earlier this month, but after placement issues and terribly threatening messages, the group decided it would be best to reevaluate.

Now, after “an outpouring of support including that of artists and building owners in the city” as well as the generosity of a handful of Calgarians, they are finally able to proceed with creating something beautiful, meaningful, and honest in Calgary’s Chinatown.
Pink Flamingo has chosen to work with Calgary artist and musician Jae Sterling for this piece, which is titled The Guide & Protector, an artist’s vision of Black voices and Black artists in Canada.
As of right now, we’re unsure as to where exactly they will begin painting the mural, but we’ll keep you all updated! We can’t imagine that this project will be anything short of impactful, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.
