Here we go again, folks! This week, the Alberta government announced that the province will re-instate a ton of new COVID restrictions on everything from schools and workplaces to social gatherings and restaurants, retail spaces and bars. It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed by all of this new information, so we’re here to simplify things for you guys! Here are all of the restrictions coming to Calgary and Edmonton businesses on Friday, November 27th.

Indoor Community centres and facilities

Have an upcoming gathering planned in a banquet hall, conference or community centre? Sorry, guys. Everything from concerts, non-approved/licensed markets to community meetings and trade shows will have to be postponed until further notice.

This includes sporting events (both professional, semi-pro, junior and college) – though some may exemptions may be considered if submitted to the city.

Also, all children’s play places and indoor playgrounds will be shut down for the time being.

Restaurants, pubs and Bars

Okay, so, this is a big one. Although all eateries are allowed to remain open, the government has requested that they tighten up on things like capacity and their hours of operation. As of Friday, only a maximum of 6 people will be able to be seated at a table. These customers must be from the same immediate household and cannot move from one table to another.

If by chance, you live alone, you can meet up to 2 non-household friends or family members, as long as they are the same people throughout these restrictions.

Unfortunately, for those who like to stay busy while they drink, entertainment such as darts, pool, and games are not allowed until further notice.

Finally, liquor can not be sold after 10 pm and in-person dining may not be offered past 11 pm. Instead, we advise you to hit the liquor store, order-in, and play Disney movie drinking games in your pajamas.

Retail and entertainment services

Okay, on to the next! The following business must now operate at a capacity of 25%.

  • Retail, including liquor and cannabis
  • Grocery stores and pharmacies
  • Clothing stores
  • Computer and technology stores
  • Hardware and automotive stores
  • Farmers markets approved by Alberta Agriculture and Forestry
  • Unlicensed outdoor seasonal markets (thank goodness)
  • Movie Theatres
  • Libraries, museums, and galleries
  • Casinos (slots only) and bingo halls
  • Amusement and waterparks
  • Gyms and recreational sports centres (dance, yoga, swimming, gymnastics, etc.)

Now, before you guys get too excited about physical fitness and your regularly scheduled sweat sessions, it’s important to note that facilities must be used for individual training and exercise only. This means group classes, training, and games are not allowed. Instructors are encouraged to teach from home via live broadcast instead!

Professional and Wellness Services

Lastly, aesthetic services (hair salons, tattoo, manicure, pedicure etc.) as well as wellness services, like massage and reflexology must now be by appointment only. This also includes professional services like lawyers, accountants, and even photographers.

Hotels, motels, hunting, and fishing lodges must also abide by the appointment-only rule – meaning spontaneous trips and staycations must be postponed.

So. There you have it, friends. All of Alberta’s new COVID restrictions. We know that it’s a lot, but a couple weeks of lowering cases will mean we have a little more freedom come the holidays. Stay safe and stay kind, Calgary.
