Calling all love birds (or aspiring love birds). We’ve teamed up with our good pals at Yellow Door Bistro to bring you our fave spring date ideas. If you’re not in the know (um, and you should be) YDB is a staple on 12th Ave in the beautiful Hotel Arts. Their chef-driven menu has been serving Calgarians innovative dishes for the past 6 years and has never ceased to impress.

Now that the weather is (finally) clearing up, Yellow Door Bistro wants you to say adios to the hermit-life and go out and enjoy the sunshine! So grab your dates and get ready to soak up some much needed Vitamin D.

PICNIC & BIKE

spring date ideas
Go on a leisurely bike ride around Eau Claire and venture down into the beautiful Prince’s Island Park. If you’re not too interested in working up a sweat on your date- don’t sweat it (literally!). Pedego has your back. Their electric bikes are quick and easy to rent and ride, and won’t break the bank.

You can even stop by River Cafe and pick up a delicious picnic basket for two! Just make sure you call 24 hours in advance to pre-order these bad boys, that are available June 1st!

BRUNCH AMONG THE FLOWERS

spring date ideas
Take a walk through the blooming flowers in the historic Reader Rock Garden. Never heard of it? We’re not surprised, but we are disappointed.

Located just south of the Stampede grounds, these gorgeous gardens host a quaint little resto called Reader’s Garden Cafe. Work up an appetite by strolling through the blossoming gardens, then stop at Reader’s for brunch and a Prosecco-based cocktail.

END OR START THE NIGHT AT YELLOW DOOR BISTRO

What’s more romantic than a nightcap and dessert for two! YDB’s whimsical decor and inventive desserts will have your date falling in love all over again. Did we mention that it won’t even break the bank?! Their brand new social hour is offering $5 glasses of featured wine and ½ price bottles from 8:30 pm to 10 pm, seven days a week!

You’ll NEED (and we mean NEED) to get at least two desserts to share. I mean, you’ll be able to spout off ever-so-cheesy lines like “the only thing sweeter than these House Made Chocolate Bon Bons is you!!!”. But seriously, the Deconstructed Lemon Meringue Tart and Apple Pecan Creme Brulee are out of this world. While these became instant favourites, keep an eye out for their new dessert menu dropping soon. You will not regret it!

ANIMAL FUN & COCKTAILS

Now that it’s nice out, you can finally go out and enjoy the zoo properly! Take an outdoor stroll through the Canadian Wilds and then get tropical at Destination Africa. If you’re in need of some liquid courage or are just a little thirsty, take a pit stop at Grazers.

This seasonal restaurant has finally reopened, and they’ve got a beautiful patio to grab a seat at. It’s next to the alpaca yard and even the peacocks are known to stop by. It’s also the only restaurant in the zoo that’s fully licensed, with daily drink specials.

CHEER ON A NEW TEAM

spring date ideas
Hit up a Cavalry FC game, and welcome them to the Calgary family! The Cavalry is the city’s newest pro sports team, playing out of the newly reno’d Spruce Meadows.

They transformed what was previously a showjumping ring to an incredible new soccer stadium, so it’s definitely a sight to see. Let loose with your date and get a ‘lil rowdy in the crowd, and make sure you take a romantic walk around the rest of the Spruce Meadows grounds!

TOUR THE BARLEY BELT

Become a beer-connoisseur and enjoy the brief walks from brewery to brewery! There are 10 breweries in the Barley Belt, and you could easily bike to all of them.

If you’re feeling like keeping it more local, Cabin, Born Colorado, Banded Peak, Confluence Distilling and Paddy’s are all within a few minutes walk from each other. So leave your car at home, and get a little buzzed at some of Calgary’s best craft breweries!

HEAD TO THE COUNTRY & TOUR A MEADERY

local beer calgary fallentimber
If you don’t know what mead is, this is your time to learn. It’s a fermented alcoholic beverage made from honey, that’s neither beer nor wine. Fallentimber is a local Albertan meadery located in Water Valley, a small town about an hour away.

So roll those windows down, and go for a beautiful drive through the foothills. Take a tour of the meadery and sample their Meadjito. It’s made with honey, fresh mint and lime giving you a refreshing summer drink that’ll be on your bevy rotation all summer long.

Anyways, pals, we hope this helps you level-up your spring dating game! Have fun out there.
