Are you feeling lucky, Calgary? Are you? Because Facebook has decided to use us as their guinea pigs for a new fancy feature, Neighbourhoods.
You may have already noticed the pilot feature, clicked, and may have even played with it a little bit. But for those who haven’t, here’s the biz.
The Facebook Neighbourhoods feature is basically meant to connect people with others living in their community. For example, if you live in the Beltline, by creating a profile, you’ll then be able to share posts, groups, and marketplace items with other people who also live in the Beltline.

To get started, all that you need to do is hop on Facebook’s mobile app where you’ll be greeted with a ‘Neighbourhoods’ banner, after it pops up, navigate your way through the guided prompts to make a profile.
Keep it vague, or update your ‘about me’ section with interests and pictures. Only those in your group will be able to see this information and it can be edited at any time. Your neighbourhood can also be changed, so if you move or are in a certain part of town and want to mingle, you can.
We can’t say how successful this feature will be, but man will it be interesting to see what comes of this if it takes off! Hyperlocal ads? Hyperlocal dating? Block parties?
Consider our eyes on this one, Calgary. It’s going to be a ride.
