Apparently, during a conference call last week with the NHL’s key players, Sidney Crosby and Alexander Ovechkin both were in favour of cutting the season short and heading straight into playoffs.

The move would cut the season short, eliminating over 180 games. Because of this, playoff spots would be determined by points percentage, not overall points. As such, teams that are above others in points might actually not make it in.

It’s a bummer, and it appears that everyone in the league recognizes this. Ovechkin, for example, was just two goals away from his 9th 50-point season, tying a record set by Wayne Gretzky. And yet, he was more apologetic to the captains of teams that would not have the chance to compete for a playoff spot.

If anything, the NHL’s reaction to COVID-19 shows a committed player base that desperately wants to play, but knows that safety is of utmost importance. We’re going to think about that when the time comes to support the league again.

Yeah, that’s right, we’re doubling down on the amount of nosebleed seats we buy next season.
