Since it was announced mid-December that Calgary was officially getting a new arena, we’ve had a hankering for details. Good news for us and anyone else who can hardly wait to hear more about the Saddledome’s replacement! The City actually just made the agreement signed by Calgary officials and the CSEC public.

Here’s a breakdown of the new information released in those documents:

The new arena is expected to cost $550 million dollars, which will be split 50/50 between the city and the Calgary Sport and Entertainment Corporation. It’s also expected to break ground in 2021!

The new sportsplex will seat a maximum of 19,000 people. This isn’t far off from the capacity of the Saddledome, which has 19,289 seats. Same same, but different.

Although the building will be owned by the city, the CSEC will operate and have exclusive use of it. We’re assuming this means sports will take presidence over other events like concerts and shows.

If something should happen to the building and it needs any major repairs, the responsibility will fall on the city. Minor day-to-day things will have to be taken care of by the CSEC.

And finally, the Saddledome will be torn down, BUT only after the new arena is built! This gives us even more time to say our goodbyes, guys.
