In addition to the recent EU travel restrictions that came into effect, New Zealand has announced that they will have a more stringent process as well. In contrast to the EU, New Zealand’s restrictions will be coming into effect on October 1, 2019, so you’ve only got a few months to adjust to the changes.

Canada finds itself on a list of 60 countries that are required to get an Electronic Travel Authority (eTA). This eTA will last for two years once cleared, and costs roughly $9 CAD to request. Also, international travellers (aka us) will need to pay an International Visitor Conservation Tourism Levy, which costs an additional $25 CAD.

So what’s the point of the eTA? Well it aims to accomplish a few things. It wants to enhance security, reduce immigration risks, and better address smuggling and biosecurity. It also wants to improve the traveller experience and support New Zealand’s international relationships.

The good news though is that the eTA is not a visa per se, and Canadians travellers won’t need one if they’re staying in New Zealand for 60 days or less.

You can read about the eTA in full here.
