Ancient lizards; apparently, they’re just like us. According to Canadian scientists, long before extinction, these incredible, seemingly indestructible creatures suffered from natural illnesses, one of which humans are all too familiar with. For the first time ever, specialists at McMaster University and the Royal Ontario Museum have diagnosed a dinosaur with malignant cancer.

This particular fossil was that of a Centrosaurus, a species often found in Alberta’s Badlands. When it was collected in the area in 1970, paleontologists just thought that a fracture had caused its misshapen appearance.

Years later, after seeing several other damaged fibula bones that looked nothing like this one, the team decided to check it out for a second time.

These guys meant business, bringing in several professionals who specialized in everything from pathology and radiology to orthopedic surgery and palaeopathology.

Using microscopic analysis and a high-resolution CT X-ray scan they had determined that the dinosaur had an aggressive form of osteosarcoma.

Due to the shocking similarities between the affected dinosaur bone and the bones of a human who suffered from the same illness, scientists will actually be able to better understand the evolution and genetics of diseases.

This is something that was not possible before all of this which is incredible, and could eventually even result in further treatment options.
