It’s December, which means plenty of companies are releasing their data and trends for the year. Good thing we’re self-proclaimed suckers for data and trends, right? Obviously, Canadians use Google for just about anything. The top Google searches in Canada for 2019 definitely reflect that, and range from nostalgic to just plain hilarious. Let’s take a peek!

Top searches in Canada in 2019:

2. Kawhi Leonard
3. Canada Election Results
4. Luke Perry
5. Cameron Boyce
6. Game of Thrones
7. Bianca Andreescu
8. Don Cherry
9. Thanos

First of all, the most-Googled topic was the Toronto Raptors. No real shocker there. The fact that Thanos from the Avengers ended up on there is not much of a surprise either. Sure, he doesn’t have much to do with Canada, but we obviously care about the fate of Iron Man.

Next up, the trending questions. Now, this is a bit of a wild ride and Canada definitely had some learning moments: “why is Toronto called the 6?”, “why did Don Cherry get fired”, and “why is blackface offensive?” We’re all over the map here, people.

Next, there were some serious topics being broached in the search bar. Apparently, the number of searches related to climate change went up by 75%. For example, “why is the Amazon burning” ended up on the top ten, and “who is Greta Thunberg” nearly made the list.

Finally, let’s take a look at the top trending recipes of 2019. We’ve got a few surprises here. These included beef stroganoff (rlly?), brussel sprouts, and coleslaw. We haven’t eaten beef stroganoff since our last microwaveable Michelina’s meal in junior high, but apparently it’s having a moment.
