Today, YYC’s sweet little community of Chinatown is an incredibly busy inner-city hub with more restaurants than we can count, a ton of cafes and adorable little shops with a variety of specialties, but what will it look like a few years from now? Well, city council has an idea or two! City of Calgary officials announced ‘Tomorrow’s Chinatown’ a pilot project to develop a cultural plan for the hotspot that they hope will stand the test of time.

Fazeel Elahi, Co-Lead for Tomorrow’s Chinatown, says that this project helps to “ensure that Chinatown is as a vibrant, culturally-rich place to live.” Elahi also said that the goal to have more people  “visit, work, and do business for generations to come” within the neighbourhood, but what exactly does this entail?

According to a press release sent out earlier this month, TC will have to be dealt through three phases. Discover, Create, and Realize. Currently, as part of the Discovery phase, in addition to a paper written and published here on the history of the area, the city is asking us for our input on what could be improved through a public survey!

This development is actually the first of its kind in North America which is pretty outstanding, considering how many cities have similar communities.

“Chinatown as the heart of the local Asian community, a place for family, for arts, entertainment and food, and a place where citizens can feel connected and that they belong.” continued Elahi.

This is going to be huge, Calgary, so keep an eye out! As always we’ll hit you folks with further information as we receive it, until then though, maybe wind down, head over and grab yourself a bubble tea, and then take walk down the Bow! Bliss…

Anyway, have a good one out there, Calgs! Vote, stay safe, and stay smart!
