YYC’s new carshare system launches tomorrow, here’s what to expect

Via Communato Calgary

Well, folks, Calgary’s new car-sharing service has officially been tested and tweaked to ensure a smooth transition onto our city’s streets, but now it’s time to get down to business. Montreal-based company Communauto launches tomorrow, but if you’re expecting everything to be as they were with Car2Go, it’s best that you read ahead. Things are going to look a little different this time around! Here’s what you need to know.

Communauto’s fleet is only about a quarter of the size as Car2Go’s

Though it was never confirmed, one can only assume that the ride sharing’s initial launch of only 150 vehicles by the end of September will be a tad smaller due to the COVID-19 virus. According to its website, the company actually has a team of staff that will be disinfecting all vehicles at the end of the day – that’s a lot of cars, a lot of wipes, and a lot of time. Fewer cars on the road mean there’s less to worry about.

How much will it cost?

According to their website, Communauto will cost $3.95/hour, $27.65/day, or $149.75/week at the long-distance rate with a Value plan.

The Communauto service will operate in a “flex zone”

For now, Communauto will only operate in a Calgary ‘flex zone.’ This 26-kilometre zone will include everything between 50th Avenue South and 20th Avenue North as well as 37th Street South to 17th Street East.

This does not include the Downtown core

Unfortunately for those hoping to drive right into the heart of the inner city, Communauto’s flex area does not include the core. According to a release sent to Curiocity, the company thought there was already enough options such as transit, and are more “focused on providing a service to people who want a car to go shopping, visit friends and family or head out to the mountains for a few hours.”

COVID-19 safety

We’ve already mentioned that all vehicles will be cleaned at the end of the day, but how will you protect yourselves in between rides? As per their website, drivers are encouraged to do the following:

  • After using a vehicle, avoid putting your hands to your mouth, nose, or face before washing your hands with warm running water and soap for at least 20 seconds.
  • Use an alcohol-based disinfectant if you do not have access to soap and water.
  • Do not hesitate to clean the steering wheel, or other surfaces, with disinfecting wipes, or the sanitizer found in the car. A time credit of up to 15 minutes is offered on FLEX vehicles for this purpose.
  • More than ever, do not leave any waste (tissues, cups, papers, etc.) in vehicles. Be sure to pick up all your belongings before leaving the vehicle.

So there you have it, friends. Everything you need to know about Communauto Calgary! We know a lot of you are still mourning the loss of our beloved mini blue and white babies, but give em’ a chance!

They’re Canadian and that’s pretty cool, right? You can read more about the company or sign up here! Now, hit the road, folks!
