Black Lives Matter protest organizers encourage COVID-19 tests for safety

Right now, in the midst of all that’s going on, some of you might need a reminder to take care of yourselves. You’re only as helpful as you are healthy, which is why organizers of this past weekend’s Black Lives Matter protest and vigil in Calgary, are encouraging participants to get tested for COVID-19.
The downtown area was flushed with incredible people marching in opposition to systemic inequality and racism. There were thousands in attendance, which was an amazing thing to see, but @calgaryagainstpolicebrutality has asked that everyone now check in with their doctors and quarantine themselves for 14 days.

Tests are available to anyone and everyone right now, and in order to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus, it’s important for the elderly and the autoimmune that you be sure you’re still COVID-free.
“It’s unfortunate we are forced to protest during a global pandemic. The decisions and actions of local, provincial and federal governments and their police forces are the reason we must protest. They’re leaving us with no other choice but to gather in large numbers during a global health crisis,” they said in a social media post.
Of course, some have compared the past Black Lives Matter protest in Calgary to attending a concert or a hockey game. To that, we agree with Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who was rather blunt on the subject during a press conference Thursday.
“Fighting for the fundamental human right to life in a protest is not the same as going out for beers with your softball team.”
Racism and equality is an unnecessarily long-running issue. It should’ve never been a problem, and now that we’ve evolved as a society, it needs to stop. Black Lives Matter, but you won’t be able to do anything for anyone if you’re ill. Please get tested, Calgary!
