Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was the price of golf, maybe it was just bad luck. Whatever reason, it’s sad news to hear that Bearspaw Golf & Country Club has officially shut down operations. No one seems to know the reason behind the sudden ceasing of business, but it’s pretty alarming, to say the least.
According to some clever reporting by Global News, Bearspaw Golf & Country Club has three liens against it, from three different financial lenders over the past four years. Sounds like things got a little out of hand, unfortunately. Take a look below to see what Lisa MacGregor from Global News had to say:
The summer renovations on the Bearspaw Club House seems to be the main culprit for sucking the money dry, according to residents and members. Apparently, Bearspaw Golf & Country Club went as far as asking each member for a few thousand dollars extra to cover the renovation cost.

When only a few decided to pitch in (after they already put money forward for renovations, mind you), Bearspaw Golf & Country Club was completely strapped. It probably didn’t help that the golf season is practically a month late, but who knows.
Passing by the Club House, you can still see the construction materials and unfinished renovations lying dormant. It’s a sad sight to see, but it’s also a sign that even Calgary’s oldest institutions aren’t immune to overspending or financial mismanagement.
Let that be a lesson to you kids out there! We’ll keep an eye on the story if anything further develops, but for now, you’ll have to swing the sticks somewhere else this summer! Alliteration for the win. In the meantime, enjoy the crappy weather!
