Calgary to Edmonton in 30 minutes? Sounds like some real Back to The Future hullabaloo, right? ….Wrong! Welcome to 2020, Marty, where anything is possible. After years of unofficial chatter, we finally got confirmation that the government is actually looking into building a high-speed train in Alberta!

According to Transportation Minister, Ric McIver, officials have signed a memorandum of understanding with Toronto-based company TransPod Inc., who will begin the planning and research necessary to move forward.

In a document sent out by the company confirming the news, TransPod said that the vehicle would be able to carry both cargo and passengers at an insane 1,000 km/h. Wowza. They also said that the Hyperloop would reduce Alberta’s carbon emissions by up to 300,000 tonnes per year and even create up to 38,000 jobs over 10 years, in addition to diversifying an economy, which almost sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it?

Honestly, the only catch seems to really be the wait time, folks. Unfortunately, we probably won’t see the completion of the train until 2027. TransPod said that after the research is done they will proceed in phases. A feasibility study will begin this year and continue on into 2022, which is when they will begin test track construction and high-speed tests. This will carry on through the duration of the entire project, overlapping with the construction of the intercity line, which will begin in 2025.

So there you have, it Alberta, we’re basically the Jetsons now!

Big things are coming… most likely. In the meantime, if you’d like more information on the Alberta high-speed train you can do so here!
