City approves new arena and 3 other major projects

Heads up Calgary: we’re getting a $500-million expansion of the BMO Centre. Another heads up: construction could start as early as next spring.

Key financing details still have to be worked out with the provincial and federal governments, but if all goes well, the feds should be covering 1/3 of the price tag. And with Premier Rachel Notley visiting Calgs next Tuesday, fingers are crossed that she makes a formal announcement to support it, too.

Our pal Nenshi says that the expansion will help us reach the cool ranks of Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal. Right now we’re a tier 2 convention city, but we’re making moves to take our (rightful) spot in tier 1.

So what exactly needs to be done? Well, to put it simply, we’re going big. The expansion will see the BMO Centre pretty much double in size, from just over 500,000 square feet to one million(!!) square feet. Sooo, that wine fest you’ve been going to religiously every year might have a lot more booze to sip on in the near future.

All we’ve gotta do is cough up the dough for our chunk of the bill, and we’ll be in business. A final decision on financing won’t come until city council meets in January, though, so maybe we should all ask Santa for a couple mill. Who knows, he could come through!

And as for the new arena on everybody’s Christmas list? Well, there’s always next year…
