This year has been a tough one – but we certainly don’t need to tell you guys that. A vaccine is on the horizon, but we’ve still got a little ways to go! Until then, it’s important that we continue to take care of each other especially now that the temperatures have begun to drop. If you’re in a position to help the vulnerable this holiday season, we’d encourage you to do exactly that! With COVID and the cold in the forecast, a lot of people are going to need a helping hand, but if you’re not sure how to lend yours, here are 5 great ways to help less fortunate Calgarians this winter.
Volunteer with the Leftovers Foundation
Food waste, especially in the restaurant industry, is almost inevitable. Luckily, through the Leftovers foundation, perfectly good products that may have just been thrown out – are rescued and donated to those who will actually eat it! This Holiday season, volunteer as a driver for the Calgary organization, and make a huge difference in the lives of those who can’t help themselves.

Shop with Purpose
This season can get pretty expensive with gifts and decorations. Why not multitask by crossing some things off your to-buy list by shopping at businesses that also work with local organizations. Check out the link above for Calgary’s Friday Sock Co. (who will be giving a portion of the proceeds made from their Holiday collection to a YYC Charity), or click here to give back by buying a candle from Milk Jar Candle Co.

Give to Parachute for Pets

If it weren’t for our furry friends, a lot of us might not have made it through quarantine. Unfortunately, because so many have been unable to work, many families have had difficulty providing their pets with the essentials. Parachutes for pets help those who need food, toys, and more for their animals by taking and distributing donations.

Order from a local MealShare partner Resto
Most of us are ordering in any way – why not make a difference while we munch! Several restaurants across Calgary are actually partnered with MealShare, a buy one give one organization that provides healthy meals and groceries to those who need it. Check out the link above for a list of MS partner restos.

Donate to the Calgary Drop-In Centre
The Calgary Drop-In Centre provides everything from clothing to food and shelter for those who are in need. Unfortunately, because they help so many, they often run out of essentials like underwear and winter coats or boots in the colder months. Round up your old winter clothes, hit up your friends and fam, and help some of Calgary’s less fortunate get through the winter.
