3 Canadian schools place in the World University Rankings

Via Mikael Kristenson

Well, according to Times Higher Education’s annual World University Rankings, which was just released for 2020, things aren’t looking so hot for Albertan institutions.

While U of A came 6th, it’s position internationally sat at 136. Meanwhile, U of C came in 8th but was between 201-250th worldwide. Whatever though, these rankings mean darn close to nothing when it comes to either finding employment post-graduation or continuing education. Basically, it’s a fun way for big schools to pat themselves on the back.

The top 5 schools in the world university rankings were dominated by England and the US. Oxford came in first, while Cambridge placed third. Meanwhile, The California Institute of Technology, Stanford, and MIT placed 2nd, 4th, and 5th, respectively.

The rankings are based on a variety of metrics. In broad strokes, the world’s best universities are determined through a mix of teaching, research, citations (aka research influence), international outlook, and industry income. The first three factors account for 30% each of the final weight, while the last two make up the final 10%.

As for the top 5 in Canada? They are U of T, UBC, McGill, McMaster, and the University of Montreal, in that order.
