One of Calgary’s best craft breweries is being targeted for purchase by a Sleeman, a multinational brewing company. There is no guarantee that Sleeman will be able to make the acquisition, but in the next month or so we’ll know if Calgary’s Wild Rose Brewery has been bought.

Since 1996, Wild Rose has been a staple of Calgary’s beer scene. In recent years, that scene has absolutely exploded, to the point where Calgary has a legitimate brewery district and ‘The Barley Belt’. We’re big fans of having a plethora of craft brewers in town, and hey, it’d be quite the success story for Wild Rose to be bought.

That being said, we always like cheering for the little guy, so a part of us is sad that the independent side of Wild Rose Brewery may be no more. Sleeman is the third-largest beer company in Canada, so this is big-boy territory that Wild Rose Brewery would be entering.
As reported by the CBC, shareholders will be having a vote next month on whether or not they want to go forward with the sale. Do we have any idea what the price is? Nope. But given the fact that the Sleeman brand is owned by Sapporo Holdings of Japan, a MAJOR international brewing player, we’d guess the budget is pretty high.
Well, if Wild Rose Brewery does sell, we’ll still be cheering for ’em. We’re biased for everything Calgary-related, after all.
